About Centerforce:
Established in 1975, Centerforce supports, educates and advocates for individuals, families and communities impacted by incarceration. We pursue our mission by:
Developing and delivering effective client-centered services to currently and formerly incarcerated individuals and their families.
Designing and implementing programs that foster constructive experiences during incarceration, promote successful re-entry, and decrease re-incarceration.
Researching, evaluating, and sharing innovative and current best program practices.
Collaborating with key stakeholders, including corrections, to achieve our goals.
Creating awareness and shaping the debate around incarceration and its effects.
Throughout its history, Centerforce has worked to promote respectful and effective services for incarcerated individuals, their families, and communities impacted by incarceration. Centerforce's founders began their work by establishing a visitors' center to provide families, friends and children of prisoners at San Quentin State Prison with a place to escape the rain and cold while waiting for their visit. Centerforce went on to establish a network of visitors centers at prison sites throughout the state and to successfully lobby the California State Legislature for a bill to provide ongoing funding for these centers. Today, Centerforce continues this tradition of working for systemic change through its direct services (provided by our four Service Areas: Children and Families Services, Transitional Services, Prisoner Service and Informational Services), annual conference, research and evaluation, and consultation and training for departments of health, community-based agencies and correctional facilities across the country and internationally.
Centerforce has an annual budget of $3.5 million and a staff of 45. For additional information, visit our website: www.centerforce.org.
